The text for this church anthem is drawn from one of a series of poetic paraphrases of Christian parables by the 18th-century poet, Christopher Smart. Scripturally, the parable in question appears in the New Testament Book of Matthew – Chapter 13, vs. 45-46.

The music is tonal but chromatic, and features a flowing, lyrical style throughout.
